Amanda Stohl Hendershot was born in Virgina in 1987. She is a graduate student at the Maryland Institute College of Art, pursuing her Masters of Art and Teaching degree. She is currently in her 5th and final year in MICA’s MAT program. When she was a young child, her parents made sure that art was a part of her life. From her father, a stone mason and sculptor, she learned to work with her hands at a young age. Her mother went to college for fashion design and her great grandmother worked as a seamstress at a sewing factory, so a knowledge of sewing and fabric also came naturally to her. Her mother also had a garden where ever Hendershot moved, so an appreciation of natural beauty has been a major influence. Her parents are consequently a major influence in her work, both in its craft and content.
Through high school, Stohl Hendershot mainly worked in drawing and painting. She was accepted into the painting program at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in Erie, PA during her sophomore year in high school. She also gained recognition as a teenager in her small, rural community as an artist, and won awards at local and statewide competitions. In 2006, she graduated high school and was accepted into the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 2010, she received her bachelor’s degree in General Fine Arts and got excepted into the Master’s of Art and Teacher program with a partial scholarship. She is currently finishing her final year as a graduate student.
